GEORGIA HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION TEST

Georgia law ((O.C.G.A., 20-2-281) requires that curriculum-based assessment be administered in grade 11 for graduation purposes. The writing test is given in the fall and the four content areas (language arts, math, science, social studies) in the spring of the junior year. The tests cover only a sample of the knowledge and skills that constitute a compete high school education. A Georgia high school graduate will have had opportunities to learn--and is expected to have mastered--much more than these tests can address. The knowledge and skills assessed on the graduation tests were selected by Georgia educators, including high school teachers and curriculum specialists. They are based on the content standards specified in the Georgia Performance Standards for grades 9-12, as established by the State Board of Education. The tests are administered several times a year so that students will have 5 opportunities to take each of the tests within their 11th - 12th grade years. Students must pass all five of these tests to receive a high school diploma.
